Graphic Novels in the Classroom
When I was a student, I always thought that the graphic novels in my class were reserved for the guys in class that didn't like to read so they just "read" something but weren't actually reading because they were just looking at pictures. Since my naive days of being a judgement middle schooler, I have come to realize that graphic novels are a great resource in a classroom. The visual aspect of the text allows deeper thinking that a traditional novel and the pictures are sure to increase comprehension in student's who do not have high reading levels. Within my unit plan, I debated including "Maus" the graphic novel about WWII. Since I wrote this plan with my current classroom in mind I chose not to include the whole text but could see myself include some snippets from the novel to provide my students with a visual component to the lesson.
I chose to do some further research on how educators currently feel about graphic novels being used in the classroom. Within this article, the first paragraph mentioned, 3 different viewpoints that teachers have taken on graphic novels in the classroom. The first is “They’re so engaging! They fit with our visual society!" The second being, “Not my favorite but…they get my kids to read.” While the forth says, “That junk isn’t real reading!” The author of the text then chose to combat the negative thoughts by providing reasons that graphic novels and be helpful. The first being that "they are a goldmine for sturggling readers," the second "they illustrate the reading and writing skills you need to teach," and third, "they provide an entry point for complex topics."
Overall, I agree with the thoughts that were presented in the article and gernerally view graphic novels as a positve thing.
