Learning Letter
Okay, so I lied in my last post; that was not my final post, instead this one is! I am writing this letter after I have completed my unit plan and so this is the final thing that I have to complete before I am done with all of my assignments for this course. That is such a crazy thing to say because of how many things I have accomplished in the class.
Starting with the first section of the learning letter, the task is to reflect on the actual work that I have done in the class. I found the book talks to be one of the more interesting assignments that I have participated in while in college. It was especially helpful because now I have so many texts that I can suggest to students. In fact, I have already used my peers' book talks to inform some book suggestions that I have given my practicum students. I believe that the idea of book talks could be altered for a secondary classroom that students could participate in. As for the unit plan, I discussed the benefits and my reflection on it in my reflection that is in my unit plan. But overall, the unit plan is one of the things that I am most proud of for completing. I am so happy that I chose to tackle it with a partner because it really helped me discuss my ideas for the plan. I believe, that I have done some of my best work in this course because this course demanded that put forth my best work possible.
The theories and concepts that we discussed in class were so valuable as I enter my 2nd practicum quarter. There were many of the concepts that I have already tried to implement into my lessons. For example, I did a lesson where my students participated in the "hatful of quotes" discussion that Brookfield talks about. There have been so many theory books that I have purchased over the course of my teacher education classes but I truly believe that these will be books that I keep well into my career. I also think that the fictional texts we read and discussed were really beneficial. I found that the discussions that arose from how we would teach those texts in a classroom were ideas that I could use when teaching other texts as well. I think that we read texts that were general enough to cover many different books that contained similar themes.
Stemming from the discussions that we had in class, I believe that largest part of this course that has influenced how I think about myself as a teacher came from the discussions that I had with my peers. I was in my first practicum quarter this quarter and that alone influenced my thinking of myself as a teacher because for the first time I was a teacher and then in this course, I had the opportunity to talk about that teaching with other teachers. I came into this course scared out of my mind that I would hate it and not do well but I am leaving this course feeling like a more capable and prepared teacher. I think that has come from a culmination of the unit plan and the discussions that we had. Aside from feeling like a more prepared teacher, I feel like I am more prepared to take on the edTPA because of the unit plan. This quarter has been the first time that I didn't feel like I was playing the role of a teacher because I felt like I was on my way to being a real teacher, and I can thank this class for having a part in that.
